Dear Five Star Team Members,
The civil unrest we are currently experiencing in our country weighs heavily on all of us. These events and the coronavirus have taken their toll on our way of life. As you may know, Five Star has a long history of not commenting on social, political or humanitarian events. Nevertheless, as I have watched recent events in our nation unfold as well as listened to the feedback and perspectives of our team members, I have come to believe that now is a time to make an exception to this practice.
I feel strongly that individual liberty and equal justice under the law are important pillars of our society. As recent events and the peaceful protests have highlighted, black people have not always had their individual liberties respected in our country, and they have not been treated equally under the law. As a practitioner of the law, I personally, and Five Star as a company, find this unacceptable and recognize that it must be addressed.
It is at times like these that I look to the Five Star values:

We listen, then act decisively.
We work to be our best.
Our behavior is guided by these values, and we are focused on ensuring that all team members are treated with respect and work in an environment where that is valued. We believe, and it has been proven, that teams that embrace diverse points of view are stronger and more effective.
Five Star is committed not only to having and supporting a diverse workforce but also to creating an environment of inclusiveness. The Five Star team member handbook prominently outlines policies based on our belief in equal opportunity, non-discrimination and anti-harassment, and we remain steadfast in upholding our commitment to those principles. We want to ensure that every person is treated with dignity and feels accepted for who they are. Nothing less will do. As I have said on many occasions, our team members are our most important asset.
I truly believe that how we accept, respect and support one another will get us through this difficult and challenging time. We are #fivestarstrong, and it is this strength that our company needs now more than ever. We can, and will, use this challenge as an opportunity to learn, to grow and to inspire others to do the same.
