Key Responsibilities

Summary:

The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall successful operation of the communities within their assigned group of communities. The person in this role develops, implements and leads a wide variety of operational initiatives to ensure successful performance outcomes related to key financial, sales, resident and team member metrics. Partnering closely with key internal stakeholders, and through the management and development of team members, this position drives operational excellence to maximize Five Star’s ability to deliver on our mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of Executive Directors, providing coaching and development to help ensure successful community based operations and outcomes. Provide regular performance feedback, recognition and motivation.
  • Responsible for the professional growth and improved management skills of Executive Directors and community managers through mentoring and training. Sets a good example and fosters team spirit through all levels of the company.
  • In partnership with the Executive Directors and the corporate accounting team, establishes a community financial management system to assure all business office policies and procedures are accurately maintained and executed.
  • Regularly reviews marketing plans with the Executive Director to ensure that services meet the needs of the local community and ultimately drive sustained and increased census to align with financial targets.
  • Ensures each community maintains substantial compliance with all local, state and federal regulations to assure licensure, relevant certifications, OSHA, Life Safety, ADA requirements, as applicable to attain the highest external recognition for care and services rendered in the community.
  • Ensures each community develops and adheres to an hours per day budget based on labor modeling guidance to optimize service model delivery with efficient and appropriate staffing schedules.
  • Reviews and approves each community's annual operating budget and capital expenditure plan as required by corporate policy and obtains governing body approval.
  • Partners with the Director of Talent to recruit, hire, and train Executive Directors and other key positions, serving as an ongoing resource for these key team members.
  • Responsible to drive accountability across all operational and people related initiatives and implementations, helping to facilitate strong communication and change management.
  • Proactively collaborate with operations leadership team across all divisions to identify opportunities and successes for continued improvement and consistency across the business.
  • Reviews community performance to make sure progress is being made on initiatives and key financial targets, non-compliant company policies and procedures and the community's business plan.
  • Acts as temporary/interim Executive Director as needed, for vacancies that may occur in region.
  • Visits community to ensure community staff, budget, marketing plan, action plans and clinical issues are reviewed and are within company guidelines.
  • Sets up and maintains an organized and effective communication process between and among communities and between region, communities and corporate, to allow for an open exchange of issues, problem solving, peer discussions as well as general information exchange.
  • Responsible for all facets of the community’s operations.
  • Fosters a culture of driving employee and resident satisfaction in conjunction with other stakeholders to drive the company’s standard in delivering great service to internal and external customers alike.
  • Supports a teaching and learning environment focused on continued skillset improvement for all team members.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, health-related field or hospitality; master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated 5-10 years of hospitality, healthcare management or similar customer oriented industry experience.
  • Prior experience in a regional role and/or with multiple building responsibilities preferred.
  • Experience in managing various disciplines while ensuring adherence to federal, state and corporate standards is required.
  • Experience in any of the following a plus, healthcare management, sales oriented positions, team building expertise and ability to hold or qualify for state licensure to operate an Assisted Living community or comparable service facility.
  • Active, valid driver's license required for extensive travel.
