Summary

Five Star Senior Living is a national provider of services for older adults and operates over 130 senior living communities, including independent living, assisted living and memory care communities, in over 30 states. We provide memory care services through a Montessori-based program called Bridge to Rediscovery. Dr. Maria Montessori was a pioneer in designing an approach to children’s education that encourages a child’s natural ability to learn. Our Bridge to Rediscovery works with that philosophy and approach in designing care and resources for individuals living with dementia. We are looking for a talented and experienced individual to join our team as our National Director of Memory Care. This role affords a truly singular opportunity to work closely with our team in building a program that supports the well-being of our residents. The successful candidate will provide leadership, strategic vision, innovative design and management of memory care operations across Five Star’s senior living communities, based on the needs and preferences of current and future residents and enhancing the overall resident experience.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the VP, Resident Experience, the National Director of Memory Care will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to Five Star’s team to deliver an amazing care experience, optimize efficiencies, develop talent and achieve desired metrics. This will include a holistic approach to the health and wellness of population with cognitive deficits, and coordination with team members – both in the corporate setting and in the field – to champion an integrated approach to resident care and promote a positive, safe and nurturing environment where people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can flourish.

Memory Care Management
The National Director of Memory Care will ensure that the program complies with all state and federal guidelines, as well as ensure teams comply with standards through continual education, coaching and updating company policies, federal, and other regulations.

  • Develop, implement, monitor and both current and future strategies and program design, to deliver an exceptional, best-in-class memory care delivery model.
  • Lead, coach, educate and support Memory Care teams in the implementation of the redesigned program.
  • Work with Executive Directors and Bridge to Rediscovery Directors to build relationships and strong communication lines among teams, and residents and families to support in their adjustment to the community and program.
  • Develop and support the philosophy of soliciting and honoring resident preferences and strong collaboration with residents and their families.
  • Develop strategy for measuring BTR program implementation progress.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams to provide strategic and operational support for providers including technology and communication.
  • Work closely with appropriate leadership team members to develop and implement memory care guidelines and policies for companywide implementation.
  • Create measurable guidelines for expectations in-person centered resident care integrating both family and the interdisciplinary team to reach resident satisfaction goals.
  • Review and revise processes and assessment with department heads to provide improvements to the quality processes.
  • Participate in annual strategic planning, talent planning and financial planning processes.
  • Anticipate future needs and opportunities for the company, ensure the organization’s sustainability, balance risk and innovation.
  • Provide visibility into key performance indicators that drive an excellent resident experience.
  • Create and execute against a roadmap of key deliverables that both advance the business as well as support the overall success of the organization.
  • Provide for all team members strong day-to-day leadership presence and support an open-door policy among all team members.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, perform staffing selections and related management functions. Ensure staffing decisions reflect the company’s culture and ability to successfully achieve strategic goals.
  • Ensure that all activities and operations are performed in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations and program standards are consistently met within in community.

Communication
The successful candidate will communicate in a manner that is motivating and informative, and will:

  • Act as liaison between community, divisional and home office teams.
  • Effectively handle follow up issues with families, residents as requested.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Executive Director concerning program strategy and implementation.
  • Demonstrate active listening techniques, seek feedback, create and maintain reporting mechanisms, gain support through effective relationships, and treat others with dignity and respect.

Requirements
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Graduate of an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science related field;
  • Experience with program development and design for residents with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders;
  • 8+ years of multi-state senior living leadership experience;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease or other related disease.
  • Strong leadership acumen in setting company directions and aligning strategic goals around business plans. Superior judgment, negotiation and decision-making skills.
  • Must have the ability to create protocols and streamline processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly.
  • Strength to be a change agent capable of leading and coaching staff toward the future.
  • Ability to effectively guide the organization and operational teams in implementing various change management initiatives..
  • Strong computer skills and proficient in using Microsoft productivity tools and software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Windows 10, etc.).
Additional Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Industry recognized advanced practice skills/ certification including any of the following:
    • Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP)
    • Certified Dementia Care Manager (CDCM)
    • AMI Certification Practitioner for Montessori for Aging
    • Attends continuing education programs required for maintenance of professional certifications and licensure.
